Author Janis Kearney: "Sundays with TJ"

Event Type: Author Program
Date: 10/9/2014
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 9:00 PM
Meet presidential diarist, newspaper publisher and author Janis F. Kearney and hear stories from her newly published book, "Sundays with TJ: 100 Years of Memories of Varner Road." Kearney writes of her father, Thomas James "TJ" Kearney, who grew up in rural southeast Arkansas in the early 1900s. His purpose-filled life included an impoverished childhood, early years as a drifter and vagabond traveling the country by train and foot, and then 70 years of working and raising 19 children on the 8-mile gravel strip called Varner Road.

Born to Arkansas Delta sharecroppers and cotton farmers, Janis Kearney worked for Civil Rights legend Daisy Gatson Bates' award-winning "Arkansas State Press" newspaper in 1987 and became publisher/owner of the newspaper the following year. She took a sabbatical from the newspaper to work with the Clinton Administration in Washington, DC, where she served as White House Media Specialist, and later, Personal Diarist to President William Jefferson Clinton.
