 Join fellow community members to watch and discuss this intimate and provocative documentary. (2013, 135 minutes)

The film by Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson chronicles the divergent paths from kindergarten through high school graduation of two middle-class African-American boys who attended a prestigious school. Presenting complicated truths about America’s struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity, "American Promise" will serve as a springboard for a discussion about achievement in our own community.

This event is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV ( and is presented in partnership with Oak Park-River Forest High School. The event is part of Questions & Dialog as well as the library's Humanity 101 series, which centers on talking, listening, and connecting around values such as compassion, integrity, and self-reflection. The film premiered nationally February 3, 2014.
